Shield / TBM Disc Cutter Application Cases

Customized Full-Cutterhead Solution for Highly Abrasive Composite Formations

Geological Background

The formation consists of the following high-abrasion layers:

  • Sand layer
  • Silty clay layer
  • Fully weathered granite
  • Strongly weathered granite
  • Moderately weathered sandstone

Original cutters showed severe wear after 300 m, with extensive carbide exposure, seriously affecting tunneling efficiency.

Challenges Faced

  • Typical high-abrasion composite ground, extremely fast tool wear
  • Clear service-life bottleneck with original cutters
  • Frequent interruptions to tunneling progress, affecting construction scheduling

Xinda Solution

After on-site investigation, Xinda engineering team implemented:

  • Full cutterhead redesign
  • Upgraded cutter ring material with improved wear and impact resistance
  • Project-specific cutter design optimized for weathered granite–sandstone composite strata

Performance Results

  • Entire cutterhead completed 2.8 km tunneling in a single pass (no cutter replacement)
  • Uniform wear across cutters
  • No abnormal failures such as cutter breakage or material spalling
  • Highly recognized by the project owner and adopted as the standard solution for subsequent sections
