Tunneling Cutting Picks – Application Cases

Client Background

A tunnel project in Guangxi encountered high-strength, highly intact rock strata (≈ UCS 90–120 MPa), described on site as “steel-plate hard rock.”

Under the original cutter configuration, more than 30 cutters were consumed per shift, with frequent shutdowns for replacement, causing severe schedule delays and bringing the project close to suspension.

Customized Solution

Xinda’s technical team recommended a high-wear-resistance cutter series specifically developed for high-strength, massive rock formations. Through optimized cemented carbide composition and advanced heat-treatment processes, the solution achieved an optimal balance between hardness and toughness and was deployed directly for on-machine comparative testing.

Implementation Results

  • Cutter consumption reduced by over 80%
  • Excavation progress restored to normal levels
  • Continuous cutting achieved without large-scale or rapid failures
  • Overall excavation stability significantly improved
